MY HAREM AND ME

At The Spa

Everyone’s been telling me that I seem stressed out lately, but honestly I don’t feel it. Sure, my life has been chaotic, but isn’t that just part of being alive?

As the lead advertising executive at my company, I certainly have a lot of responsibilities to shoulder, but I feel like I’m able to take them on with a levelheadedness that many others couldn’t possibly dream of.

I’m feeling solid in my assertion that everything is just fine, until today, when I reach across the desk towards my coffee cup and notice that my hand is shaking. I freeze, staring down at the fingers before me that flat out refuse to stop moving, along with their wrist. The tremble is unmistakable, and suddenly my mind is flooded with worry about what could possibly be triggering this.

Of course, my first instinct is to imagine the absolute worst-case scenario, but before I let my thoughts spiral any farther out of control, I stand up from my desk. I notice now that my heart is slamming hard within my chest, hammering away as I head out of my office and down the hall.

Fortunately, the company’s on site medical examiner is not that far away, and I quickly burst into his waiting room. “I need to see the doctor,” I tell a girl behind the desk, who’s quite startled by my bluster.

“Yes, Mr. Green,” she says. “Just head on back.”

I walk deeper into the office and eventually push my way into the doctor’s small meeting room, causing him to look up from his desk with a startled expression.

 “Sean? What’s up?” he asks.

“I’m shaking,” I tell him. “I’m literally shaking.”

“Calm down, buddy,” Doctor Kim says, motioning over to a nearby chair. “What do you mean you’re shaking?”

I sit down and try my best to calm my nerves, taking a deep breath and then letting it out slowly. When I’ve finally settled as much as possible, I hold out my hand so that Doctor Kim can see the subtle quakes.

 There are none.

“Wait a minute,” I stammer. “I was just shaking.”

The doctor nods. “I believe you.”

I flash the man a stern look, trying to convey that fact that I’m not at all crazy and certainly not lying.

“I do!” Doctor Kim insists. “I have some other concerns, though.”

I sit back in my chair a bit. “Okay. Like what?”

“The way you burst in here just now,” the doctor offers. “This isn’t like you. I’ve known you for years, Sean, and I’ve never seen you like this.”

As he speaks, Doctor Kim begins to administer a series of routine tests, taking my temperature and wrapping a blood pressure sleeve around my arm. He pumps it up and then lets the air drain out, recording my results.
